The sum is part of a US $3-million package approved by the US Congress to treat dioxin-contaminated areas and launch medical supportive activities in Việt Nam. The remaining US $2 million will be poured in dioxin treatment in Đà Nẵng.

Three organizations - East Meets West Foundation (EMW), Save the Children (SC) and the Việt Nam Assistance to the Handicapped (VNAH) – were selected to conduct the projects for three years.

Accordingly, VNAH will link district-level health centers in Đà Nẵng to provide rehabilitation services, assist the disabled and their families in improving livelihoods and integrating into the community, support the local authorities and clinics to implement projects for disabled people.

Through job promotion activities, SC helps widen employment opportunities for the handicapped and their families.

Meanwhile, EMW serves to upgrade the living conditions of the disabled, particularly children, by providing orthopedic surgery, physiotherapy, and rehabilitation services.

US Ambassador to Việt Nam Michael Michalak underscored his Government’s goodwill to back the Vietnamese Government to ensure handicapped people’s access to social services, broaden their occupational knowledge and skills.

Since 1989, with over US $200 million of relief and development aid, USAID has launched numerous campaigns and projects to improve living standards of the Vietnamese handicapped.

From 2000 on, the US Government, through USAID, has cooperated with the Vietnamese Government to enhance HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment, improve the accessibility to social and educational services for vulnerable groups, guarantee environment management and socio-economic development.
