VN, Australia foster defense ties

VGP – Vietnamese Minister of National Defense Phung Quang Thanh and his Australian counterpart Stephen Smith co-chaired a press conference in Ha Noi on August 29 to announce the outcomes of their talks held earlier.

The two senior defense officials said during their talks, both sides reviewed defense cooperation and discussed ways to beef up the bilateral ties in the future.

Both sides agreed to further enhance consultation at multilateral forums and promote bilateral dialogue at both strategic and implementation levels.

In the future, the two ministries will continue to expand the English training program for Vietnamese military personnel and discuss issues relating to security in the Asia Pacific region on the basis of mutual respect and mutual benefit.

Australia’s defense ministry pledged to assist Viet Nam in clearing post-war bombs and mines.

Minister Thanh said Australian Defense Minister Stephen Smith’s visit will significantly contribute to deepening the Viet Nam-Australia comprehensive partnership and cooperation between their ministries./.
