VN Peacekeeping Center inaugurated

VGP - After PM Nguyen Tan Dung’s announcement on Viet Nam’s readiness to join peacekeeping activities of the United Nations on March 27, the Viet Nam Peacekeeping Center was officially opened at a ceremony in Ha Noi on May 27.

May 27, 2014 4:54 PM GMT+7

Deputy PM Vu Duc Dam: Vietnamese people have undergone many fierce wars against invaders so they always have a burning desire for peace.

The ceremony saw the presence of Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam, Minister of National Defense Phung Quang Thanh, Under Secretary General for the Department of Field Support (DFS) Ameerah Haq, among others.

Addressing the ceremony, Deputy PM Dam highlighted that the launch of the centre marks the country’s official participation in the UN’s peacekeeping force.

He stressed that Vietnamese people have undergone many fierce wars against invaders so they always have a burning desire for peace.

He stated that Viet Nam resolutely protects its sovereignty and legitimate interests while acting and striving for peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region and the world.

Peace and happiness are always lofty goals of human beings. Peace, cooperation and development are the main trends in the world while dangers of conflicts and wars still remain. Peace is created only when unilateral acts running counter to international law are repealed and it is preserved only when all nations respect each other’s independence and sovereignty and share the responsibility of keeping peace, stability, cooperation and development through practical actions, Deputy PM Dam said.

He expressed his belief that the first two officers of the Viet Nam People’s Army joining the UN mission in Southern Sudan would fulfill their tasks outstandingly.

According to Minister of National Defence Phung Quang Thanh, the ministry has sent nearly 200 military engineers and medical officers abroad for training in English language and required knowledge and processes.

The two officers, Lieutenant Colonel Mac Duc Trong and Lieutenant Colonel Tran Nam Ngan from the Department of External Affairs under the Ministry of National Defense, will be communication officers for the UN mission in Southern Sudan. In 2015, Viet Nam plans to deploy a level 2 evacuation hospital and a company of sappers to the mission.

The participation in the UN’s peacekeeping force manifests the Vietnamese nation’s desire for peace and devotion to the right, independence, freedom and happiness of people and the human kind.

It also shows Viet Nam’s consistent policy in supporting peace and lofty goals of the UN and affirms the country’s commitments and capacity as a responsible member in the international community.
