VN: Spermatids successfully grown in culture medium

VGP – The Embryo Technology Centre (ETC) under the Army Medical Institute announced last week that it was successful in growing spermatids alive for treatment of male infertility. For the first time, in Việt Nam, a baby girl was born by spermatid-based artificial insemination.

With spermatid method, male infertility will be reduced

Notably, Việt Nam has become the first Asian country successfully applying the method.

According to Prof. Quản Hoàng Lâm, ETC Director, with a percentage of 10% success in nourishing and transplanting sperms, the achievement is remarkable.

So far, only a dozen of advanced medical nations are capable of applying the method.

At present, in Việt Nam, male infertility accounts for 40% and 10% of childless couples is attributable to husbands who are unable to produce sperms.

To treat a case of male infertility due to low sperm count, doctors will raise the patient’s spermatids into sperms in culture medium. The process regularly takes around one day.

Then the sperms are directly introduced into the egg via special instruments and under controlled laboratory conditions.
