VN, U.S. look to strengthen energy cooperation
VGP – Viet Nam and the United States signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on cooperation in the field of energy, during the recent working trip to Washington made by a Vietnamese intersectoral delegation, headed by Minister of Industry and Trade Tran Tuan Anh.

The newly inked document has opened up a new framework for the enhancement of bilateral comprehensive collaboration in the areas such as liquefied gas, power, petroleum, coal, renewable energy and economic and effective use of energy.
The MoU signing shows that the two governments attach importance to the key cooperation contents in the future between Viet Nam and the U.S., the Vietnamese minister said.
By signing the document, the two sides have defined the common goals and basic solutions to further expand and deepen the mutually beneficial cooperative relations between the two states. At the same time, the move demonstrates the role of the two governments, especially in interacting and creating the most favorable conditions for their business communities and partners to enforce the opportunities and capitalize on the market access chances.
U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Energy ResourcesFrancis Fannon also spoke highly of the MoU’s significance in strengthening Viet Nam-U.S. ties in the time ahead.
After the signing ceremony, Minister Tran Tuan Anh handed over a document of the Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade informing the U.S. side of the Prime Minister’s agreeing to assign the AES Corporation as the investors of the Son My 2 Power Plant project in the form of build-operate-transfer (BOT).
Once put into operation, the US$5 billion plant will produce an import demand for liquefied natural gas (LNG) worth nearly US$2 billion per year from the U.S.
