VN aims 4th biggest rubber producer

VGP – Việt Nam will strive to become the world’s 4th biggest rubber producer by 2012, said the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

May 30, 2011 3:51 PM GMT+7

The country is currently the world’s 4th biggest rubber exporters following Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia.

Vietnamese rubber products have been available in 39 countries and territories worldwide, including China which accounts for 60% of the country’s export volume, according to the Việt Nam Rubber Association (VRA).

Last year, rubber export made a record high of 782,000 tons, worth of over US $2.3 billion, the VRA reported in a recent conference.

In Q1/2011, Việt Nam shipped 179,000 tons of rubber abroad, earning some US $798 million, or a surge of 48% in quantity and 50% in value against the same period last year.

Rubber now becomes the 2nd key export commodity of the Vietnamese agriculture sector.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development estimated that rubber export may reach nearly 830,000 tons for over US $3 billion by the end of this year.

The Government has set to plant rubber trees on 800,000 hectares and raise rubber export turnover to over US $5 billion by 2015.
