Themed “Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”, summit has approved 17 Sustainable Development Goals and 169 targets.

Speaking at the event, the State President said that Viet Nam wholeheartedly supports the 2030 Agenda and pledges to do our level best to ensure its successful implementation.

To embark on the journey, the State President stressed that “only by ensuring peace and stability can we pool adequate resources and foster the necessary partnerships for SDG implementation.”

Maintaining peace and security on the basis of respect for international law is a precondition for the successful implementation of the SDGs, he added.

He expressed his belief that successful implementation of the 2030 Agenda requires strong political will and full and effective mobilization of domestic resources.

As part of Viet Nam’s National Strategy on Sustainable Development for 2011-2020, the country commits to accelerating economic restructuring, transforming the growth model to enhance growth quality and economic efficiency, guarantee social equality, preserve natural resources, protect the environment and respond to climate change.

State President Sang said it is imperative to strengthen the global partnership for sustainable development, in which the United Nations can and should play the critical coordinating role.

He said that Viet Nam is working with other ASEAN member states to build an ASEAN Community by the end of 2015 and a Southeast Asian region of peace, stability, cooperation and prosperity. He called on ASEAN and its partners to stay engaged in common efforts to maintain and consolidate peace and security in the region, including ensuring maritime safety and security, and freedom of navigation and overflight in the East Sea - the main artery connecting ASEAN with other regions.

Viet Nam pledges to be an active and responsible partner in these common endeavors, to help ensure that no one is left behind, State President Sang concluded.
