VN: Among group of biggest fishing export turnovers

Deputy PM Dung said that Viet Nam is regarded as one of the countries with abundant aquatic development potentials. Over the past years, the aquatic sector has developed vigorously. Last year, total aquaculture output valued US$ 7.7 billion in which export revenue hit US$ 9 billion. In the first ten months of 2019, aquaculture export was US$ 7.1 billion.

Viet Nam has entered the group of countries with the highest aquaculture export turnovers, the Deputy PM said. Aquaculture development has also contributed remarkably to economic growth, job generation, and living standard development.

However, the aquaculture sector is coping with numerous challenges and difficulties including poor production scale, outdated infrastructure, inefficient production, low quality and added value.

Deputy PM Dung stressed that the PM would direct the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, relevant ministries and agencies to review, adjust, and supplement plans in accordance with the Law on Planning especially the Strategy on Viet Nam Aquaculture Sector Development in the 2021-2030 period with a vision towards 2045.

Removing ‘yellow card’

Deputy PM Dung highlighted the determination to definitely terminating infringements of Vietnamese fishing vessels against the EC’s recommendations regarding illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

So far, fishermen in seven localities have still violated the regulations and their fishermen were captured by foreign countries.

Mr. Dung announced that an inspection team from the EC Directorate General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries would return to Viet Nam to conduct the second review of Viet Nam’s implementation of recommendations regarding IUU fishing. They would remove the ‘yellow card’ or impose ‘red card,’ the Deputy PM noticed.

Hence, Deputy PM Trinh Dinh Dung called upon the National Assembly’s deputies from 28 coastal localities to disseminate and supervise fishermen to effectively implement the European Commission (EC)’ recommendations and remove ‘yellow card’ warning to Viet Nam over IUU fishing./.
