VGP – Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung has affirmed the Vietnamese Government encourages large and experienced investors to get engaged in the electricity source development projects in Viet Nam.

Deputy PM Trinh Dinh Dung receives Bemerd Da Santos, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the U.S.-based AES Corporation (AES), Ha Noi, August 23, 2018

The deputy PM made the statement during his reception for Bemerd Da Santos, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the U.S.-based AES Corporation (AES), in Ha Noi on August 23.

The host spoke highly of AES’s operations in Viet Nam over the past years, especially the firm’s investment in building and putting into operation the Mong Duong II BOT Thermal Power Plant. He also recognized AES’s cooperation recommendations in the fields of energy and electricity source development.

Deputy PM Dung stated that more than 40% of Viet Nam’s current power source structure is hydropower, while the remaining is thermal power. However, the hydropower sources have now been fully exploited, so in the future, the thermopower sources will play a major role. As for the coal-fired thermal power projects, the requirement is to use modern, environmentally friendly technologies, ensuring that they do not affect the living conditions of the people in the project area.

At the same time, the Government will also issue policies to develop gas-fired powers sources (solar, wind, etc.), aiming to ensure enough electricity for growth, he said.

Applauding AES’s attention to the electricity source development projects in Viet Nam, Deputy PM Dung assigned the Ministry of Industry and Trade to work closely with AES in order to exchange and agree on the specific contents before submitting them to the authorized agencies for approval.

For his part, Bemerd Da Santo highly appreciated the support from the Vietnamese Government over the past few years, stating that the U.S. Government is also interested in and creates favorable conditions for the energy projects that AES is implementing or will implement in Viet Nam.

He pledged to continue working closely with relevant units and agencies in order improve the efficiency of the existing projects, as well as expand its investment to the energy projects and the development of new power sources in Viet Nam.

AES is listed among the world’s 200 energy companies with the largest revenues, featuring over 10,000 employees globally. The company is currently the largest gas supplier in Central America and the Caribbean.
