The Minister made the statement on June 5 in the northern province of Bắc Kạn at the national meeting in response to the World Environment Day and the International Year of Forests.

Minister Nguyên also stressed the necessity to utilize and develop energy-saving technologies, environmentally-friendly technologies and preserve forest resources and other natural resources.

The world is facing with a variety of challenges including climate change, unsustainable exploitation of natural resources, degradation in biological diversity, and environmental pollution.

In Việt Nam, the Law on Environmental Protection and the Law on Biodiversity have raised people’s awareness of environmental protection, said Mr. Nguyên while adding that new types of green urban centers, industrial zones, and ecological economic models have emerged with positive outcomes.

At the national meeting, Minister Nguyên awarded the Ramsar certificate from the UNESCO to Ba Bể Lake as the 3rd Ramsar site in Việt Nam.

Over the past 40 years, Việt Nam has joined the World Environment Day with other 100 countries.

Under the theme “Forests: Nature at Your Service”, the World Environment Day in 2011 attaches special importance to the status and role of forests to the cause of economic growth and environmental protection and raise alerts to uncontrolled deforestration and degradation of forests worldwide./.
