VN’s achievements in protecting and promoting human rights in the country are the premise for the promotion of its role and position in multilateral forums on human rights

In addition to showing its role as an active, proactive and responsible member, Viet Nam is striving to play significant role in multilateral forums.

Viet Nam's election as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security (UNSC) with a near unanimous support is one of the outstanding testaments to the international community’s trust in the country’s efforts in multilateral mechanisms.

Such credibility is not limited to the UNSC-related areas but covers many other areas and mechanisms, including those concerning the assurance of human rights.

Being proactive and positive and rising to play a key role in multilateral forums on human rights

2019 is an animated year with many important activities at global and regional forums on human rights. During the forums, Viet Nam not only affirmed its policies and achievements on the protection and promotion of human rights, but also contributed substantially to the joint efforts to promote human rights values.

At the regional level, Viet Nam is also an active member presiding over many ASEAN-led activities on human rights, including the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) and the ASEAN Commission on the Promotion and the Protection of the Rights of Women and Children (ACWC). Viet Nam hosts the AICHR Workshop on the Promotion of Gender Equality and

At the UN forums as well as regional forums related to human rights, Viet Nam’s participation today is not just limited to informing the international community about its policies, laws and achievements in ensuring human rights.

Viet Nam has step by step made more substantial contributions to the forums through the sharing of its approach and experience, while contributing proactively and responsibly to the issues of the international community’s concern and staying willing to play a key role and serve as a mediator when needed.

Achievements in ensuring human rights help to promote Viet Nam’s position in forums

Viet Nam’s achievements in protecting and promoting human rights in the country are the premise for the promotion of its role and position in multilateral forums on human rights.

In 2019, Viet Nam continues to improve the system of laws, institutions and policies on human rights, notably including the National Assembly adopting the revised Labour Code with many new provisions that better ensure the rights of workers, and the accession to the International Labour Organization’s Convention 98 on the Right to Organize and Collective Bargaining.

In addition, Viet Nam is really moving towards a facilitative government in service of the people, as the quality of public services has gradually improved. The atmosphere of innovation and creativity is spreading inside each person and in every region across the country.

The initial achievements allow Viet Nam to assert its role in multilateral forums as well as promote the effectiveness of bilateral human rights dialogue mechanisms between Viet Nam and its partners. In 2020, with the dual role of ASEAN Chair and a non-permanent member of the UNSC, Viet Nam will be confronted with a number of opportunities.

This is the chance for Viet Nam to utilize to further promote the nation’s position in the international arena, facilitate its extensive international integration and seize resources to serve national development, thus creating conditions to better ensure the rights of the people./.
