VN ready for international responsibilities

VGP – By joining the United Nations Security Council, Viet Nam promotes its proactive and active role contributing to promoting peace and stability in the world and ensuring a favorable environment for the country’s socio-economic development, Deputy Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung has said.

December 24, 2019 2:34 PM GMT+7

In June 2019, Viet Nam was elected as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2020-2021 tenure with a record high number of votes.

This shows the trust of the international community for Viet Nam, as well as the acknowledgement of Viet Nam’s efforts in the integration process and its contributions to the common affairs of the international community to maintain and promote world peace and security.

During the term, Viet Nam will assume the role of President of the UN Security Council twice, in January 2020 and April 2021.

Touching on some advantages of Viet Nam as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, Deputy FM Trung said that in 2020, Viet Nam also takes over the rotating ASEAN Chairmanship, which will enable the country to facilitate relations between the UN and regional organizations, especially ASEAN.

Viet Nam has attained many achievements in the socio-economic development process, once serving as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for 2008-2009 and having experience in international cooperation and the organization of multilateral activities and regional and international forums.

Briefing the media at the UN on Viet Nam’s priorities during its upcoming UN Security Council tenure, Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, Head of Viet Nam’s Permanent Mission at the UN, emphasized that Viet Nam will strive to promote the council’s leading role and improve its operational efficiency in maintaining international peace and security, preventing conflicts and helping to resolve crises. The efforts to minimize the impacts of climate change on world peace and security are also one of the priorities that Viet Nam will promote in the time ahead, he said.

As a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, Viet Nam has an important opportunity to continue implementing its foreign policy of independence, peace, cooperation and development, and multilateralization and diversification of international relations.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Viet Nam is urgently and thoroughly preparing for its upcoming UN Security Council term. During a short period of time – just six months after the election – Viet Nam’s ministries, departments and sectors have reviewed and developed documents on each issue in the agenda, while building mechanisms for interdisciplinary coordination and consultation in handling the relevant affairs.

In the second time being elected as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, Viet Nam has affirmed its strong determination to continue making active and effective contributions to the international community’s common efforts and affairs, for peace and development of the world.
