Viet Nam has worked with other non-permanent members (E10) to facilitate mutual understanding among permanent members (P5) in order to improve the effectiveness of the UNSC, Quy said.

According to Ambassador Quy, the UNSC is facing long-lasting challenges, including 68 conflict-related dossiers, or issues that remain unaddressed over the past 75 years since the establishment of the United Nations, and especially unprecedented challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Viet Nam has been active in accelerating joint efforts in a wide range of issues, including climate change and Covid-19 response as well as the promoting the role and voice of ASEAN and E10 group, said the diplomat.

As president of the UNSC in January this year, Viet Nam chaired the first-ever meeting between the UN and ASEAN to discuss on the maintenance of international peace and security with the participation of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

As the ASEAN Chair, Viet Nam worked with other ASEAN member States to draft and submit a new resolution on ASEAN-UN cooperation to the UN General Asembly, which was sponsored by a record number of countries (110).

Next year, Viet Nam will strive to foster cooperation between regional organizations and the UN, uphold the role of regional and sub-regional organizations in resolving matters related international peace and security, according to Quy.

He took the occasion to stress the need to further enhance solidarity in the UNSC.

Last year, Viet Nam was elected to the UNSC for the second time with a record number of votes, getting 192 votes out of the 193 member countries and territories of the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly in New York./.
