At a ceremony in Bangkok, Thailand on November 18, Thai Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan, who serves as the Chair of the ADMM and ADMM Plus 2019, handed over the chairmanship token of these two important cooperation frameworks to Vietnamese Defence Minister Gen. Ngo Xuan Lich.

Addressing the event, Lich said 2020 is of great significance to both ASEAN and Viet Nam, marking the fifth founding anniversary of the ASEAN Community, the 25th anniversary of Viet Nam’s admission to the bloc, and the 10th founding anniversary of the ADMM Plus.

Hailing the achievements of the ADMM and ADMM Plus mechanisms over the past few years, the Vietnamese minister affirmed that the positive results in 2019 would be a favorable platform for Viet Nam to hold the chairmanship for 2020.

The initiatives proposed by the predecessor chairperson will continue to be accelerated by Viet Nam, aiming to create a premise for the sustainable development of all countries in the region, he stated.

At the handover ceremony, Lich expressed his desire to continue receiving support from ASEAN member countries and partners in order to realize the theme of the ASEAN Year 2020, emphasizing that the success of Viet Nam in 2020 is the success of all member countries as well as the whole region.
