VN to attend UN Human Rights Council's 25th session

He is scheduled to address the session introducing country’s policies, efforts and achievements in ensuring and promoting human rights, as well as the resolve to implement pledged commitments.

He will also suggest priorities for the UNHRC, as well as table those which Vietnam will realize in the future, with a consistent policy of appreciating cooperation and constructive dialogues in the council, being a pro-active and responsible member and making practical contributions to the council’s activities.

This is the first time Viet Nam has attended a high-level session of the UNHRC since it became the council’s member in last November with the majority of votes.

The gathering will attract leaders of over 80 countries and  territories and international organizations given the issue of human rights draw much attention worldwide.

Viet Nam has made progress in human rights during the past years, particularly bringing the fifth chapter of the 1992 Constitution, which defines fundamental rights and responsibilities of citizens, to the second in the Constitution amended last year.

The amendment reflects a cognitive change - succession of the 1946 Constitution and constitutions of other countries, said Professor Tran Ngoc Duong from the Institute for Legislative Studies.

Viet Nam’s membership in the UNHRC is the international community’s recognition to the country’s efforts in ensuring human rights.

In addition, Viet Nam is also among countries with the fastest growth of the Internet and the largest number of Internet users and one of six countries which have reached many Millennium Development Goals prior to 2015.
