VN to have more new style communes by 2020

VGP – The Vietnamese Government has set the target of increasing the percentage of communes satisfying the criteria of new-style rural areas to 20% and 50% by 2015 and 2020, respectively.

The new set of criteria serves as a basis of a national target program on building new rural areas.

The criteria cover various aspects, including planning and implementation, transport, irrigation, electrification, schools and facilities for cultural activities, markets, post, rural housing, per-capita income, poverty, labor structure, organization of production activities, healthcare services and others.

After one year of implementing the program, all 63 provinces and centrally-run cities have established their steering committees for the work.

However, a number of localities have not paid due attention to the importance of the program as well as the role of farmers.

To accelerate the realization of the program, the Government will not fix State capital resources for the program to enable localities to flexibly mobilize other sources for it.

Inspection will also be sped up so that real progress will be made.

Deputy PM Nguyễn Sinh Hùng has recently urged localities to focus on raising the people’s incomes, clearing dilapidated houses in disadvantaged areas, beefing up vocational training, and securing nursery and junior education in rural areas.
