March 13, 2007 8:55 AM GMT+7

During the working sessions taking place in the ambiance of openness, constructiveness and mutual respect, the Vietnamese sides introduced to the Vatican delegates great successes made by the Vietnamese people in the renovation cause over the past years, briefed the Vietnamese State’s policies to respect and guarantee freedom of beliefs and religious practices for citizens, and informed the country’s big fruits in realizing the policies on national unity and religious affairs in in general and Catholicism in particular.
The
Vatican dignitaries highly hailed the achievements gained by Vietnam in different aspects, including religion.

The two sides discussed some issues concerning the Vietnam Catholic Church and other matters of common concern. They agreed that the meeting between PM Nguyễn Tấn Dũng and Pope Benedict XVI and other Vatican senior dignitaries on January 25, 2007 was an important milestone in the Vietnam-Vatican relationship.

The Vietnamese side praised all initiatives suggested by the two sides to boost the bilateral relationship for the sake of peace, stability, and development. Vietnam also proposed that the diplomatic agencies of both sides should collaborate each other to discuss the bilateral ties. Accordingly, a joint expert team with representatives of both sides will be founded to share, consider and agree on basic principles for this relation as well as measures and steps to develop the relationship between Vietnam and the Vatican in an appropriate and positive manner in the future, in line with the common benefits. The Vatican delegation proactively acknowledged Vietnam’s suggestions.

During their stay in Vietnam, the Vatican officials paid visits to Quảng Ninh, Bình Định, Kon Tum and Gia Lai Provinces where they were welcomed solemnly by leaders of the provincial People’s Committees, officials of relevant agencies, bishops, priests, clergymen and Catholics.
