Vice President joins ECOSOC’s meeting on climate change

VGP - Vice President Dang Thi Ngoc Thinh delivered a speech at the opening session of a high-level segment on achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and coping with climate change of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in New York on July 19.

She stressed impacts caused by climate change, including prolonged El Nino phenomenon, on the realization of SDGs and the people’s enjoyment of their rights.

The Vice President highlighted  efforts made by the Vietnamese Government in assisting the people in addressing consequences caused by drought and sea-water intrusion, expressing her hope that the international community will provide more assistance for Viet Nam, especially financial aid, technology and specific initiatives to cope with the situations.

At the meeting with President of the UN General Assembly Mogens Lykketoft, Ms. Thinh thanked and appreciated effective cooperation and support of the UN for Viet Nam in recent years, affirming that the nation will continue upholding its role as a responsible member of the international community and the UN.

She suggested the UN bring into full play its role in maintaining peace, stability, cooperation and development in lines with respecting the international regulations.

She asked the UN General Assembly pay attention to realizingthe 2030 Agenda on sustainable development and climate change adaptation.

Regarding the East Sea issue, the Vice President asserted VietNam’s consistent stance of the settlement of relevant disputes by peaceful measures, including diplomatic and legal processes, in line with the UN Charter and international law, including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

UN Under-Secretary General and Director of the UN Development Program (UNDP) Helen Clark affirmed that the UNDP will promote cooperation and increase assistance for Viet Nam in the 2017-2021 period in such areas as institutional enhancement, green growth and climate change adaption.

Under-Secretary General and Executive Director of the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) Babatunde Osotimehin committed to supporting Viet Nam in coping with new population challenges such as gender imbalance at birth, reproductive health, population aging, and population quality improvement.
