The Committee was established on June 15, 1977 to co-ordinate and implement various UNESCO-supported programs in the areas of education, culture and science in Vietnam.
Over the past 30 years, the Committee has made positive contributions to the country's socio-economic development and international integration. Vietnam's role, position and prestige have been increasingly raised on the international arena. Vietnam were elected as member of the UNESCO Executive Council (1978-1983 and 2001-2005) and other bodies.

The Committee has collaborated with many ministries, sectors and local authorities in realizing cultural cooperation programs with UNESCO.

With assistance from UNESCO, Vietnam has been trusted to host big regional events. UNESCO has also provided support for Vietnam in mapping out a long-term education strategy, improving the quality of education at all levels. Vietnam has for many years received UNESCO’ awards on eliminating illiteracy.

At present, UNESCO and Vietnam's ministries, sectors and local authorities are efficiently carrying out the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014). Vietnam is considered an example in realizing various UNESCO activities, such as developing source documents.

Addressing the anniversary, Vice President of the National Committee for UNESCO Lê Kinh Tài stressed that “the Committee was recognized by UNESCO and many member countries as one of the most effective and prestigious national committees”.

Vietnam is now one of eight countries in which the United Nations is piloting the model “A UN Agency”, so the National Committee for UNESCO should make greater efforts to deal with all difficulties and fulfill its assignments.
