The wifi city of Da Nang
The central city of Hoi An on March 28 marked it becoming the first locality in Viet Nam and Southeast Asia to offer free wireless Internet access (Wi-Fi) to both residents and visitors.

The project for Free Wi-Fi Internet System in Hoi An City was invested by over VND 25 billion (over US$ 12 million), which came from social funds.

The system has 350 Wi-Fi access points covering all corners of Hoi An City, providing residents and visitors with 256Mb/s speeded Internet service.

The Free Wi-Fi network proved to support businesseses in reducing network cost and infrastructure investment expenditures, and increasing the number of visitors to tourist attractions.

The success of this project is expected to kick start other similar wireless projects to provide quality coverage for fixed broadband, mobile, 3G, 4G in Viet Nam.

The WiFi city of Ha Long made debut on April 23. In the first phase, 34 Internet transmitters were installed in key areas in Ha Long Bay like Bai Chay tourist area as well as Tuan Chau tourism site.

The work, carried out by the Viet Nam Post and Telecommunications Corporation, at a cost of over VND 200 billion (US$100 million), came just days before the 2012 Ha Long Tourism Week.

Tourists and local people will be able to access free wifi throughout the city, but will be charged for using entertainment services or if they exceed the download limit.

The supply of free wifi hotspots in Ha Long is just part of a project to install wireless Internet coverage in Quang Ninh province, and is intended to cover other towns and cities in the province, including Uong Bi, Cam Pha, Van Don, Mong Cai, by 2015.

The central port city of Da Nang on November 2 officially launched the US$1 million project to install 170 Wi-Fi stations at public lights in the inner city, public places, universities, tourist sites and agencies.

After five-month installation, the project is hoped to help 20,000 people to surf the Internet for free.

The second phase will kick off in January, 2013 with 130 other Wi-Fi stations to be installed in similar places.

Once operating, the project will enable better IT infrastructure; boost trade promotion, lure more investment, advertise tourism images and raise cultural and educational standards for the city.

In addition, the People’s Committee of Hue has approved a project to provide free wireless internet services across the city to better meet demand for internet services among tourists and local residents.

The project has drawn experiences from free wireless internet service in the city of Hoi An in central Quang Nam Province.

In big cities like Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh City, free wireless services are provided through 5,000 free stations.

The northern province of Ninh Binh on August 15 announced the installation of free Wi-Fi services in five locations on a trial basis. After 2-3 months, Ninh Binh Telecommunications Company will collect fees of Wi-Fi services, which have data transfer rates of 54-600 Mbps.

The boom of free Wi-Fi services in attractive tourism sites is expected to help convert Viet Nam into an powerful IT country in 2020 and a most favoured tourist destination of international tourists./.
