Vietnamese catfish exporters face unhealthy anti-dumping duty from US

VGP – The US anti-dumping tariff on Vietnamese pangasius catfish is unreasonable, making domestic enterprises suffer severe losses, said Deputy Chairman Nguyễn Hữu Dũng of the Việt Nam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP).

The VASEP Deputy Chairman announced on September 12 that Vietnamese enterprises have been imposed the high tariffs after the US Department of Commerce (DOC) lately made preliminary decision on anti-dumping tax on pangasius catfish from Việt Nam into the US market between August 1, 2008 and July 31, 2009.

Under the decision, quite a few Vietnamese firms have to pay US $4.22 per kilo of frozen pangasius fillet while the retail selling prices are lower in the US market.

Mr. Dũng reported that VASEP is working with relevant Vietnamese ministries, agencies and enterprises to request the DOC to reconsider its anti-dumping tariffs on the goods.

In August, the DOC also raised the duties from 2.89% to 4.27% on shrimp shipments delivered by 29 Vietnamese seafood exporters from February 1, 2008 to January 31, 2009.

Other exporters had to pay a tax rate of 25.76%.

Việt Nam has asked the World Trade Organization (WTO) to investigate its complaints against US anti-dumping measures.
