In the afternoon of March 23, Party General Secretary Nông Đức Mạnh, State President Nguyễn Minh Triết, and PM Nguyễn Tấn Dũng gave separate receptions to the Indian delegation. During these meetings, the Vietnamese leaders considered the Indian House Speaker and his entourage’s visit to Vietnam a practical action to confirm the close unity and traditional friendship between the two countries and nations, bringing the bilateral relationship to a new height.

The Vietnamese leaders showed their gladness to see India’s recent economic achievements and assessed them as the country’s strength to strengthen its role in the international arena. Mentioning the bilateral cooperation between Vietnam and India, the leaders asserted that what has been done over the past time is not really corresponding to the two countries’ potentialities. They expressed their hope that, in the time to come, apart from traditional fields, Vietnam and India will further cooperate in all fields, especially maritime industry, science and technology, software, education-training, and marine produce. Vietnam is now working with other ASEAN members to campaign for an ASEAN-India Agreement.

Indian House Speaker Somnath Chatterjee thanked Vietnamese leaders for the cordial receptions and the Vietnamese Government for her support to India on multilateral forums. The guest stressed that the Vietnamese country and people always stay in the Indian people’s heart. He wished the traditional bilateral relationship between the two countries to further develop well.

The year 2007 will see the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between Vietnam and India. The Vietnamese leaders showed their hope that India will provide good conditions for Vietnam to successfully hold the “Vietnam Days in India". Mr. Samnath Chatterjee pledged that the Indian Government will facilitate this important cultural event.

Chairman Nguyễn Phú Trọng emphasized that Vietnam wants to develop traditional friendly relations with India. He also agreed with Mr. Somnath Chatterjee’s suggestion that the Vietnamese and Indian legislative bodies should cement their ties to improve their performance. NA Chairman Nguyễn Phú Trọng said that, in her integration into the world economy, Vietnam needs capital, science and technology, and management experience which are India’s advantages, so the two countries can cooperate in these fields.
