WB finances agriculture competitiveness project
VGP - The Lâm Đồng Provincial People’s Committee on Monday launched the US $8.5-million agriculture competitiveness project (ACP) which will be carried out in the period of 2009-20013. The World Bank is the main donor for this project.
The project aims to improve the competitiveness of smallholder farmers by helping them access to markets, providing them with technological advances, organizing production teams or groups, and building critical production infrastructure.
The World Bank pledged to give US $6.802 million to the project.
A representative from the Lâm Đồng People’s Committee said that the province is determined to successfully carry out the project by conducting at least ten scientific studies on agricultural promotion, forming 15-20 production alliances between farmers and businesses, and assisting 5,000 farmers to acquire new production methods through agriculture incentive contracts.
The ACP will generate 15,000-20,000 jobs, with priority being given to poor ethnic minority women.
Apart from Lâm Đồng, the ACP is implemented in other seven provinces, namely Thanh Hóa, Nghệ An, Bình Định, Ninh Thuận, Bình Thuận, Đắk Lắk and Gia Lai, with a total fund of US $59.7 million from the World Bank.
