Weekly COVID-19 update

VGP – Viet Nam has confirmed 34 new imported cases of COVID-19 last week, bringing the patient tally to 1168, according to the National Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control.

Today marks the 54th consecutive day the country has gone with zero new community infections.  

Among the latest imported cases, two are foreigners, including an expert from France and spouse of an Indian expert (known as Patient 1125). The rest of 32 patients are Vietnamese repatriated from Russia (nine), Angola (13), France (six), the U.S. (one ), and Germany (three). 

Meanwhile, 26 patients have recovered over the past week, raising the total number of recoveries to 1,057. None of the current active cases are in critical health conditions. 

Among the 111 patients still under treatment, three have tested negative for SARS-CoV-2 once, five twice and ten thrice.

Since July 25 when the second wave of Coronavirus began, 571 coronavirus infections have been confirmed in 17 localities across the country, including Da Nang (389 cases); Quang Nam (97 cases), Hai Duong (16), Ha Noi (20), HCMC (8), Quang Tri (7), Bac Giang (6), Quang Ngai (5), Lang Son (4), Dak Lak (3), Dong Nai (2), Thai Binh (2), Ha Nam (1), Thanh Hoa (1), Khanh Hoa (1), Ba Ria-Vung Tau (6), Ninh Binh (3).  

The number of COVID-19 fatalities stands at 35 with all of them suffering  from serious underlying health conditions.

As many as 14,901 people having close contact with the confirmed cases or coming from the pandemic-hit regions are being put under quarantine at present, including 173 in hospitals, 13,615 in concentrated quarantine sites and 1,113 at home or accommodation facilities.

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc on October 19 called for tightening control over entry into Viet Nam at all border gates so that the country could pursue the dual goals of fighting COVID-19 and rebooting the economy.

The Government leader also asked ministries, agencies, and localities to continue sustaining vigilance and strictly complying with prevention measures to prevent emergence of the pandemic. 

People in Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh City, the two largest cities in Viet Nam were also urged to wear masks when going out or taking public vehicles.

Since April, the country conducted 221 rescue flights to repatriate 46,058 nationals of whom 212 were tested positive for coronavirus in 43 flights./.
