DPM Khiêm meets Foreign Ministers of US, Russia

VGP – Deputy PM, FM Phạm Gia Khiêm on Friday separately met with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Russian FM Sergei Lavrov on the sidelines of the on-going meetings between ASEAN and its partners in Bali, Indonesia.

Deputy PM, FM Khiêm and Ms. Hillary Clinton noted that the relationship between Việt Nam and the US has made positive progress in various fields, including economy, trade, security, science and technology, education, and humanitarian activities.

Both FMs agreed that the two countries will continue to push the bilateral ties to new height towards the strategic partnership.

They also discussed coordination on regional and international forums, including non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, water security in Mekong River and maritime security.

The Vietnamese leader applauded the US’s active role at ARF,EAS, and APEC and spoke highly of the US’s cooperation within the Lower Mekong Initiative (LMI).

Deputy PM, FM Khiêm affirmed Việt Nam’s support for enhancing ASEAN-US relations toward early establishment of a strategic partnership.

The US will step up efforts to expand the bilateral ties with ASEAN for peace, stability and development in the region, said Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

In his meeting with Russian FM Sergei Lavrov, both sides spoke highly of the traditional friendship and strategic partnership, particularly since the Russian President Medvedev’s visit to Việt Nam in November last year.

The two FMs expressed their pleasure at the fine developments of the bilateral cooperation in economy, trade, energy, oil and gas, telecommunication, science and technology and others, and the upgrading of the chairmanship of the Intergovernmental Committee to Deputy PM level.

Both sides discussed preparations for Russian PM Putin’s upcoming visit to Việt Nam, the 4th round of strategic dialogue mechanism on diplomacy-security-defense between the two countries, cooperation between the two foreign ministries, and establishment of Việt Nam-Russia University of Technology in Việt Nam. 

Deputy PM, FM Khiêm and FM also exchanged views on regional and international issues of common concern. They hoped that relevant parties would address disputes in the East Sea through peaceful negotiations and on the basis of the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and Declaration of the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC).

The two FMs appreciated the recent approval of guidelines for the DOC implementation between ASEAN and China.
