As of August 23, Vietnamese enterprises had signed export contracts for nearly 6.4 million tons of rice, up 9.6% year on year. Rice on stockpile is now over 1.3 million tons.

Mr. Trương Thanh Phong, Chairman of the Việt Nam Food Association, said farmers sold their summer-autumn rice to local enterprises for VND6,248 per kg on average.

He predicted that export prices will rise slightly in late 2011 due to impacts of policies adopted by the new Thai Government, estimating that this year’s rice export volume will reach 7 million tons.

According to Mr. Đào Quốc Luân, Vice Director of the Planning and Investment Department of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the country is expected to harvest 41.6 million tons in paddy rice this year, 1.5 million tons more than last year. Of the amount, some 27.5 million tons will be for domestic consumption, and 14.8 million tons for export.
