Delegates from 40 countries to join FAO conference

VGP - Ministers, senior officials and representatives of civil societies from 40 countries have confirmed to participate in the 31st session of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) Regional Conference for Asia and the Pacific region in Hà Nội from March 12-16.

March 11, 2012 6:12 PM GMT+7

The delegates will debate rising and unstable food prices, food securities, poverty, natural resource exhaustion.

According to FAO, the global food price index increased by 1% in the previous month. It is forecast that the index would surge promptly by the end of this decade with prices of rice and wheat posting a 40% and 27% increase, respectively.

Asia-Pacific region now has 578 million poor and malnourished people, equivalent to 62% of the world's total figure. Growing population, limited farming land, and rising oil price would make poverty and malnutrition worse. Moreover, climate change is also a threat for Asia's food security and socio-political stability.

FAO said that enhancing agricultural production stability and facilitating poor people to access to food are the keys to deal with the aforesaid challenges.

The conference is expected to create a chance for civil societies, farmers' associations and private sector to exchange view with governments in the fight against poverty.
