PM Nguyen Tan Dung: Perfect preparation plans, ensure ultimate security and safety for APEC 2006 leaders’ meeting

(Vietnam Government Website) – On 6 November, at the headquarters of the Government, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung chaired a meeting to hear the security sub-committee report what has been done to ensure safety and security for the 14th Asia – Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) leaders’ meeting (APEC 14) to be held from 12 – 19 November 2006.

Also present at the meeting were Mr Vu Khoan, the PM’s special envoy, leaders  of the APEC Vietnam 2006 sub-committees, Ministry of National Defence, Ministry of Public Security and Government Office, Mayor of Hanoi, Party secretaries of Ha Tay, Hai Phong, Hai Duong, Hung Yen and Bac Ninh provinces, and leaders of other agencies.

 

On behalf of the head of the security sub-committee, Deputy Public Security Minister Nguyen Van Huong reported to the Prime Minister what has been done to ensure security and safety for the APEC 14 summit which is to take place over the next few days in Hanoi.

 

Security and safety plans in place, personnel on standby

 

The security and military forces have worked well with services and provinces, under the direct instruction of the security sub-committee, provided security for all APEC events that have taken place in Vietnam over the past year. Now, they have been mobilized fully and equipped with modern equipment. Tens of security plans have been carefully designed and tested. The Vietnamese side has also exchanged information with their foreign counterparts and cooperated to install additional modern equipment. Mr Nguyen Van Huong said that at present, all security plans have been approved. The mobilization and deployment of personnel and means, rehearsal and preparations have been completed. All forces of public security, military and healthcare under the security sub-committee are on ready to take up their duties.

 

Ensure ultimate security and safety for the summit

 

After calling delegates’ attention to 9 important matters regarding contingencies, hearing Mr Vu Khoan, representatives of Ministry of National Defence, Ministry of Public Security, provinces and Hanoi report, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung made a conclusion, praising the efforts to prepare for the upcoming summit by the military, police, services and provinces in providing security and safety for APEC events since early this year. He stressed the summit is a landmark event in the country’s foreign affairs. The successful organization of the summit will enhance Vietnam’s image on the world arena. He warned that although Vietnam enjoys political stability and social order, we should still stay alert.

 

The PM instructs ensuring security across the nation on both air and sea territories. He requests all forces to review and check again all the security plans and intensify patrol and control over criminals. He reminds Hanoi police to perfect the plan to ease traffic congestion, making sure people still commute to work and students go to school normally. They should work with neighboring provinces to make proper traffic regulating plans in order to ensure smooth movement during the summit’s time.
