Addressing the event, Secretary of the provincial Party Committee Le Huu Phuc highlighted the significance of the victory 40 years ago, saying that Quang Tri became the first province in Southern Vietnam to be liberated. The victory made an important contribution to the liberation of the south and national reunification on April 30, 1975.

Politburo member Dinh The Huynh, Secretary of the Party Central Committee and Head of its Commission for Popularisation and Education, congratulated Quang Tri province on its great developmental achievements over the past 40 years.

He stressed that entering a new stage of development, the provincial Party organisation, army and people need to uphold the revolutionary tradition and strengthen solidarity to adopt comprehensive solutions in order to foster socio-economic development, ensure defence and security and develop the strong political system, thus contributing to successfully implementing the Resolution of the 11th Party National Congress.

The province should continue to promote its geographic advantages to serve socio-economic development, Huynh said.

Over the past 40 years, Quang Tri province has obtained great achievements. In 2011, it recorded an annual economic growth rate of 10.8 percent, with export turnover growing 11 times as compared with 2009, and per capita income reaching 21.6 million VND (over 1,000 USD). The province has also seen progress in the fields of education, health, social affairs and culture.

Earlier on the night of April 30, hundreds of lanterns and flowers were floated as tributes to those who laid down their lives for national independence and freedom on the southern bank of Thach Han River in Quang Tri town.

On the same day, a Vietnam News Agency delegation led by General Director Nguyen Duc Loi offered incense and laid flowers in commemoration of fallen combatants at the National Truong Son Martyrs’ Cemetery. More than 250 VNA journalists died during the war for national independence./.
