Under a decision made by the PM on July 3 approving the overall scheme for socio-economic development of Nam Định Province towards 2020, the province’s annual GDP growth rate will reach approximately 12% and 13% on average by 2010 and 2011-15 respectively.

By 2010, its economic structure will consist of industry and construction (about 39%), services (36%) and agro-forestry and fishery (25%).

Nam Định will attach its importance to boosting up the cultivation of special rice in the southern suburban districts as well as expanding the high-quality rice production in the northern ones. The province’s rice-growing area will be kept unchanged around 70,000-75,000 ha, providing an annual productivity of 13-14 tons/ha and a yield of 900,000-950,000 tons.

The province will vigorously invest in shipbuilders like Thịnh Long Shipbuilding Company and establish more shipping industrial parks, such as Nam Định, Xuân Kiên, Mỹ Lộc, Nghĩa Bình, and Thịnh Long.

Tourism will become a significant economic sector, with marine resorts of Rạng Đông, Thịnh Long, and Quất Lâm.

Under the scheme, Nam Định will represent a stock trading center in the Southern area of the Red River Delta.
