At the reception, President Nguyễn Minh Triết affirmed that Vietnam always supports the role of multilateral institutions in international relations, especially that played by the United Nations (UN). Vietnam also advocates the global organization’s reforms in general and its system renovations in Vietnam in particular. The President thanked and highly hailed the UN’s effective cooperation and assistance to the country in implementing programs on poverty alleviation and improvement of people’s living standard. President Nguyễn Minh Triết expressed his hope that UN experts will continue to share their experience with Vietnam in designing socio-economic development strategies after the country became an official WTO member.

UNDG Chair Kemal Dervis stressed that Vietnam deserves an example for other developing countries to follow in poverty reduction and socio-economic development, especially in fulfilling the Millennium Development Goals. Mr. Dervis showed his gratitude to the Vietnamese Government’s strong commitments and drastic actions to put in place different models of cooperation under the UN framework as well as its specific activities destined to facilitate the UN reform plans, particularly the renovation of the Security Council.
