VN, Azerbaijan strengthen traditional relations

At the talks with the Azerbaijani President, Mr. Sang asserted that Viet Nam respects the relations with Azerbaijan.

Mr. Ilham Alyev confirmed that Azerbaijan regards Viet Nam as its crucial partner in Southeast Asia.

 

Currently, two-way trade stood only at around US$400 million. The two sides agreed to exchange delegations and businesses to organize trade promotion to raise the turnover to US$1 billion in the future.

 

They were also unanimous in accelarating cooperation in oil and gas and consider it as the two countries' long-term strategy.

 

The Azerbaijan side will create favorable conditions for Vietnamese businesses to invest in Azerbaijan.

 

They agreed to expand cooperation in other potential fields such as real estate, education-training, tourism and launch a direct air route.

 

State President Sang confirmed ASEAN and Viet Nam’s viewpoint in dealing with maritime disputes by peaceful measures in line with interntional laws such as the 1982 UN Convention on Law of the Sea 1982 (UNCLOS), the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC) towards building a Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC) to ensure peace, security and maritime safety in the region.

 

The two leaders agreed that any conflict should be resolved by peaceful means in accordance with international law and the UN Charter.

 

President Sang thanked Azerbaijan for supporting Viet Nam’s membership of the UN Human Rights Council for 2014-2016 tenure.

 

He asked Azerbaijan to back Viet Nam’s candidacy for a seat in the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) (2016-2018 term) and the UN Security Council (2020-2021 term).

 

After the talks, the two leaders hosted a press briefing to announce the outcomes of their talks.  

They witnessed the signing of an intergovernmental agreement on economic, trade, scientific and technological cooperation and another one on double taxation avoidance./.
