State President meets with UN Secretary-General

State President Truong Tan Sang said that he was glad to meet the UN Secretary-General.

He emphasized that Viet Nam succeeded in fulfilling many UN-initiated Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and was determined in long-lasting sustainable development goals.

Viet Nam, said the Head of State, has mainstreamed sustainable development goals in national strategies and programs which centre around people.

According to Mr. Sang, as a new comer of the medium-income group, Viet Nam seeks the UN’s support for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.  

As an active and responsible member of the international community, Viet Nam commits to joint endeavors of the community in response to climate change and peacekeeping mission, affirmed the State President.  

Regarding regional issues of common concerns, State President praised the positive and subjective standpoint of Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on the East Sea issue.

He also proposed the Secretary-General continue to have voice and back the settlement of disputes via peaceful measures and in accordance with international law, especially the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and early completion of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC).

For his part, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon highly valued the Vietnamese delegation's attendance at the 70th Session of the UN General Assembly.

Mr. Ban Ki-moon hailed the positive participation of Viet Nam in crafting the Agenda.

He believed that as one of eight successful pilot countries of the “One United Nations” Initiative and good implementer of the MDGs, Viet Nam would achieve sustainable development goals by 2030./.
