PM supports Japan’s bigger role in global landscape

VGP – Viet Nam expects to work with Japan to continue deepening the bilateral relations in a practical and effective manner, especially in such fields like economy, trade, investment, science-technology, and security-defense, said PM Nguyen Tan Dung.

The Government chief made the statement while welcoming Japanese Defense Minister Nakatani Gen in Ha Noi on Friday.

PM Dung stated that the Vietnamese Government always supports practical and effective cooperation activities between the two defense ministries, hoping that Japan would further promote its role in the region and the world in order to make active contributions to the maintenance of peace, stability, security, safety and freedom of navigation and aviation in the region.

The Japanese Defense Minister said he will try his best to foster practical cooperation in defense and security with Viet Nam, support countries in the region to maintain peace and stability, especially maritime security and engagement in UN peacekeeping operations.

Mr. Nakatani Gen affirmed that Japan shares the view and position of ASEAN and Viet Nam on ensuring peace, stability, security, safety and freedom of navigation and aviation in the region. Disputes must be settled through peaceful measures in accordance with international law, including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Relevant parties must seriously implement the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea and work toward the conclusion of a Code of Conduct for the East Sea, he added.

The Japanese defense minister stressed that East Sea issue is a “vital matter” for both relevant countries and whole region.

Earlier on the same day, Japanese Defense Minister held talks with his Vietnamese counterpart Phung Quang Thanh./.
