The world puts expectations on VN

VGP – International and regional public opinions have highly appreciated the role played by Viet Nam and put great expectations on the country when it serves as the ASEAN Chair 2020 and a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2020-2021 term, voicing a strong belief that Viet Nam will successfully complete the “dual mission” at the ASEAN and the UN in 2020.

Members of the Vietnamese delegation celebrate with joy after the results from the voting show that Viet Nam is elected as a non-permanent member of the UNSC for the 2020-2021 term with a near unanimous approval.

* Australia’s The Interpreter website ran an article stating that the Prime Minister of Viet Nam raising the symbolic hammer during an ASEAN chairmanship hand-over ceremony within the framework of the 35th ASEAN Summit in November 2019 has kick-started an extremely important period for Viet Nam’s foreign affairs. The article emphasized that the balancing the dual responsibilities between steering the goals of the ASEAN Vision in 2020 and the position of a non-permanent UNSC member will pose considerable pressure, but also create significant opportunities for Viet Nam.

* The website of the Wilson Center (US) published an article affirming that Viet Nam concurrently holding two positions as ASEAN Chair and a non-permanent member of the UNSC showing that 2020 will be an important year for Viet Nam to demonstrate its role and actively contribute to the common affairs of the region and the world. According to the article, in recent years, Viet Nam has paid special attention to implementing its foreign policy and expanding international cooperation, including its participation in the UN peacekeeping forces.

* Choi Shing Kwok, Director of the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (Singapore), stated that the assumption of a non-permanent seat at the UNSC gives Viet Nam the chance to show its global leadership role, which, he said, is beneficial for the ASEAN. According, the ASEAN’s position and central role will be expressed in the international arena.

* In an article titled “Viet Nam is powering full steam towards the future”, Thailand’s Bangkok Post affirmed that after more than 30 years of renovation, Viet Nam is ready to show its international role. Indonesia’s Kompas newspaper quoted experts as saying that by choosing the theme “Cohesive and Responsive” for the ASEAN Chairmanship Year 2020, Viet Nam prioritizes strengthening ASEAN solidarity to proactively respond to new challenges.

* Professor C. Thayer of the University of New South Wales (Australia) assessed that Viet Nam has many advantages to assume such two important positions in 2020, including its rapidly growing economy and stable domestic situation. Extensive international relations have helped Viet Nam to promote issues at the UN. Viet Nam has contributed to UN peacekeeping activities, which also means actively supporting world peace not only in words but also in actions.

By joining the United Nations Security Council, Viet Nam promotes its proactive and active role contributing to promoting peace and stability in the world and ensuring a favorable environment for the country’s socio-economic development.

In June 2019, Viet Nam was elected as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2020-2021 tenure with a record high number of votes.

This shows the trust of the international community for Viet Nam, as well as the acknowledgement of Viet Nam’s efforts in the integration process and its contributions to the common affairs of the international community to maintain and promote world peace and security.

During the term, Viet Nam will assume the role of President of the UN Security Council twice, in January 2020 and April 2021.
