Agriculture-forestry-aquaculture exports up 3.2%

VGP – Viet Nam gained nearly US$4 billion from exporting agriculture-forestry-aquaculture products in December 2019, bringing this year's total export value to US$41.3 billion, up 3.2% against the previous year, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Specifically, the nation earned US$18.5 billion, US$8.3 billion, US$0.71 billion and US$11.2 billion from exporting agricultural, aquatic, livestock and forestry products in 2019 to key markets such as China, Hong Kong (China), the U.S., EU, ASEAN and Japan, making up 27.8%, 21.9%, 11.4%, 9.8% and 8.7%, respectively.

The import value of agriculture-forestry-aquaculture products in December 2019 hit US$2.4 billion, raising the total import value in the year to US$30.9 billion, down 1.6%.

The country spent US$25.62 billion to import key agriculture-forestry-aquaculture products and nearly US$3.73 billion for livestock products in 2019.

]Rice exports last year was estimated at 6.34 million tons, worth US$2.79 billion, up 3.9% in volume and down 9.7% in value. The Philippines took the lead among Viet Nam’s rice export markets over the first 11 months of 2019 with 1.97 tons, valued US$813.3 million.

Other Viet Nam’s rice export markets saw high growths such as Senegal (9.86 times), Ivory Coast (up 78.6%), Chinese Taipei (up 31%), Hong Kong (China) (up 28.3%) and Tanzania (up 26.6%).

The export value of fruits and vegetables in December 2019 reached US$320 million, raising the total export value in the year to US$3.74 billion, down 1.9%.

China ranked first among the country’s fruits and vegetables export markets in 2019, with US$2.24 billion making up 65.7% and down 13.2%. It was followed by the U.S. US$137.7 million, up 9.2%, the Republic of Korea US$119.4 million, up 14.2%, Japan US$112.4 million, up 14.4% and the Netherlands US$73.8 million, up 34.8%.  

As many as 126,000 tons of coffee, worth US$218 million was exported in December 2019, bringing the total value of coffee exports during the year to US$2.75 billion, down 22.4%. Germany and the U.S. were the largest coffee exporters of Viet Nam over the first 11 months of 2019, accounting for 12.9% and 8.7%, respectively.

In 2019, Viet Nam also gained US$973 million, US$235 million and US$715 million from exporting cassava, tea and peppercorn.
