According to U.S. Ambassador to Viet Nam Daniel J. Krirenbrink, Viet Nam is one of the fastest growing economies in the world, particularly in the past two decades. Specifically, the average growth rate of imports and exports between the two countries hit over 16% per year during the period of 2010-2019.

The U.S. remains the largest export market for Vietnamese goods, with a revenue of US$55.6 billion in the first 11 months of 2019, up 27.9% year on year. Viet Nam’s key exports to the U.S. include garment and textile, which always rank first in turnover, reaching US$15 billion last year, accounting for 45.2% of Viet Nam’s total garment and textile export value. Meanwhile, Viet Nam exported over US$5 billion worth of footwear products, up 14.2% year on year.

In 2019, Viet Nam imported about US$12 billion worth of commodities from the U.S. market. Statistics show that U.S. firms have invested more than US$9.2 billion in Viet Nam thus far, ranking 11th among countries and territories investing in the Southeast Asian country.

U.S. Consul General in Ho Chi Minh City, Marie C. Damour, said 25 years ago, the U.S. and Viet Nam established bilateral diplomatic ties, stating that more and more U.S. businesses are eyeing Viet Nam as their investments destination. These companies highly appreciate the future of Viet Nam and all declare that “your success is our success,” she said.

Not just in bilateral relations, Viet Nam and the U.S. have also coordinated closely in multilateral forums, such as the APEC, ASEAN and ARF, for peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region.

The two sides have agreed to strengthen ASEAN-US relations and support ASEAN’s central role in the regional structure.

In the context of Viet Nam’s global integration and assumption of the ASEAN Chairmanship in 2020, Viet Nam continues to attach importance to and wishes to enhance its relations with countries around the world, including the U.S., while serving the development goals and promoting its role as a reliable and responsible partner.
