VN, Indonesia laud EU’s pioneering role in promoting multilateralism

VGP – Viet Nam and Indonesia, the two non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), delivered a joint speech appreciating the European Union (EU)’s pioneering role in facilitating multilateralism during a UNSC-organized video conference on UN-EU cooperation on May 28.

The event aimed to accelerate collaboration between the UN and regional and sub-regional organizations in maintaining international peace and security. 

Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, head of the Vietnamese mission to the UN, and Ambassador Dian Triansyah Djani, head of the Indonesian mission to the UN, spoke highly of the EU’s role in preserving international peace and security.

They expressed their hopes that the EU would continue coordinating with the UN to promote cooperation in the areas of addressing conflicts, mediation, providing humanitarian relief, and facilitating multilateralism on the basis of the UN Charter’s principles.

The two diplomats took the occasion to highlight ASEAN’s contributions to building a peaceful, secure and prosperous Southeast Asia, and creating a favorable environment to join partner countries to build trust, enhance preventive diplomacy, minimize differences, and engage in the issues of mutual concern.

They called on regional organizations, including the EU and ASEAN, to work together to further accelerate contents of cooperation with the UN, including the EU strengthening support for improving capabilities of ASEAN member states’ UN peacekeeping forces and sharing information in the field.

Speaking at the conference, Josep Borrell, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the European Commission, affirmed his backing for the rules-based international order with the UN at its core.

Multilateralism is under threat precisely when it is needed most, he said, urging countries to support the UN reform process to prevent unilateralism and power politics from gaining the upper hand.

UNSC member states all showed their support for the EU-UN cooperation and the two organizations’ joint efforts to boost multilateralism, while stressing that collaboration between the EU and regional organizations should be in accordance with provisions of Chapter VIII of the UN Charter. 

They emphasized the EU’s role in solving issues related to international security and peace at hot spots, especially in the missions of mediating, reconciling and peacekeeping in Africa, the Middle East and Balkans./.
