Vietnamese lychees enter FairPrice Mart in Singapore

It was sold at 5 SGD (US$3.59) per kg in the first week under a promotion programme, and 6 SGD in the next week.

Thanks to its good quality and eye-catching appearance, the fruit has quickly won over local consumers, leaving shelves in many supermarkets empty after only two weeks. 

Viet Nam has been working to export the fruit to Singapore since 2018, but in the last two years lychees were only sold in outdoor markets without proper preservation, causing them to rot quickly and discouraging importers.

Over the past three years, the office has organised trips to Viet Nam for Singaporean fruit importers, including FairPrice whose representatives directly examined Vietnamese lychee farms.

Since the beginning of this year’s  lychee season, it has coordinated with the Viet Nam Trade Promotion Agency and the Department of Industry and Trade of Bac Giangprovince, dubbed as the kingdom of lychee in  Viet Nam, to hold an online workshop promoting the fruit.

The office plans to join hands with Bac Giang and Hai Duong provinces, and FairPrice to organise a Vietnamese lychee day in Singapore in the next crop.

Earlier, the first batch of fresh lychees, weighing over two tons, has gone through customs clearance at Japan’s Nirata International Airport, and will be on shelves at Japanese supermarkets and stores soon.
