Trade surplus nears US$17 bln in nine months

VGP – Viet Nam enjoyed a trade surplus of US$16.99 billion over the recent three quarters of 2020, according to the General Statistics Office.

During January-September period, total trade reaches US$388.73 billion, a year-on-year increase of 1.8%.

The total export and import values in nine months of 2020 reached US$388.73 billion, a year-on-year increase of 1.8%. 

Export turnover hit US$202.86 billion, up 4.2% while import volume witnessed a year-on-year decrease of 0.8% to US$185.87 billion. 

During the reviewed period, 30 items posted export value of US$1 billion each, making up 91.3% of the total export turnover and five reported the export value exceeding US$10 billion, accounting for 59.8%. 

Among key export items, phones and accessories took the lead with US$36.7 billion, making up 18.1% and down 5.5% compared to the same period last year, followed by electronics, computers and spare parts US$32.2 billion, up 25.9%, garments US$22.1 billion, down 10.3%, machines and spare parts US$18.2 billion, up 39.8% and footwear US$12.1 billion, down 8.8%. 

The U.S. remained the largest importer of Viet Nam’s products with US$54.8 billion, up 22.9%, followed by China US$31.9 billion, up 12.7%, the EU US$26 billion, down 2.6%, ASEAN US$17 billion, down 12.5%, the Republic of Korea US$14.5 billion, down 2% and Japan US$14.1 billion, down 5.7%. 

Meanwhile, China topped the list of Viet Nam’s import markets with US$56.8 billion, up 2.7%, followed by the Republic of Korea US$32.8 billion, down 7.1%, ASEAN US$21.8 billion, down 8.7%, Japan US$14.6 billion, up 2.8%, the EU US$10.8 billion, up 5.6% and the U.S. US$10.5 billion, down 1.6%.
