VN, US mark 25th anniversary of diplomatic ties

VGP – The Viet Nam Organization of Friendship (VUFO) on October 7 organized a ceremony to mark the 25th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Viet Nam and the US (1995-2020).

Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam, Permanent Deputy Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son, VUFO President Nguyen Phuong Nga, and the US Ambassador to Viet Nam Daniel J. Kritenbrink attended the ceremony.

Addressing the event, Deputy PM Vu Duc Dam underlined that the normalization of Viet Nam-US diplomatic relations was an important decision of the two countries' leaders, which closed a period of difficulties and heralded a promising era.

The bilateral ties have grown extensively and substantively across all fields, specifically, the two-way trade surged by nearly 170 times since 1995 to nearly US$ 80 billion.

Mr. Dam reiterated that Viet Nam always pursues the foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, openness, diversification and multi-lateralization of external relations and active international integration, in which the country considers the US as a leading partner.

As the current ASEAN Chair and non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, the two countries have closely coordinated in issues of common concern at regional and international levels, said Dam, adding that the sides have also been working with the international community to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic and other global challenges.

On this occasion, Deputy PM Dam expressed the gratitude to leaders, politicians, organizations, individuals, and friends who have contributed to cementing and deepening the bilateral ties.

He affirmed Viet Nam will continue working with the U.S. to further intensifying the bilateral comprehensive partnership in a bid to make effective and practical contributions to development in the respective countries as well as to regional and global peace, stability, and development.

For his part, Ambassador Daniel J.Kritenbrink described the bilateral ties impressive in all aspects, from security, trade, education, post-war issues to energy and healthcare.

The trade ties have been flourished and American businesses' increasing investment in Viet Nam has brought about numerous economic achievements for both sides.

The US remains one of Viet Nam’s largest importers while Viet Nam is among the markets with fastest growth of imports from the US.

The Ambassador expressed his belief that the Viet Nam-US relations would continue flourishing in 2020 and the next 25 years./.
