Weekly COVID-19 update: 53 new cases, 36 recoveries

VGP - Viet Nam confirmed 53 new imported cases of Covid-19 while 36 patients were declared free of the virus from December 28, 2020 to January 3, 2021.

The latest cases include three South African nationals confirmed positive for Covid-19 on Sunday.

The rest are Vietnamese, of whom 47 were brought home from Russia (12), France (9), the U.S. (9), Germany (8) Canada (3), Mexico (2), Mozambique (1), Malaysia (1), Japan (1), and Chinese Taipei (1) and three illegal entrants.

With 36 more patients cleared of the virus, the total number of recoveries increased to 1,339. The number of COVID-19 fatalities remained at 35 while none of the current patients is in critical health conditions.

The nation is placing 18,743 people who had been in contact with Covid-19 patients or returned home from the pandemic-stricken areas under medical surveillance and quarantine. Of these, 160 are kept at hospitals, 17,008 at concentrated quarantine sites and 1,575 at places of residence.

During the past week, patient numbered 1435, a Vietnamese woman repatriated from the UK, was confirmed as the first Covid-19 case with new and more transmissible variant of the virus that first emerged in the UK.

Director of An Giang Provincial Department of Public Security, Col. Dinh Van Noi, announced on December 30 that the Department’s Investigation Security Agency issued a decision to begin legal proceedings in a case of organizing illegal entry into Viet Nam in the local district of An Phu on December 24. The investigation detected signs of criminal activity in the case, and decided to commence legal proceedings to expand investigations.

Meanwhile, the Institute of Vaccines and Medical Biologicals (IVAC) has asked for the Ministry of Health's permission to conduct human trials of its Covid-19 vaccine, Covivax, since late January.

If permitted, this will be the second Vietnamese vaccine in clinical trials on humans, after Nanocovax of the Nanogen Pharmaceutical Biotechnology JSC, which started the first phase of human trials on December 17, 2020./.
