The strategy targets to convert forestry sector into an economic-technical sector, establish, manage, protect, develop, and sustainably optimize forests and forestry land.

It aims to guaranteeing equal participation of economic components to forestry activities, mobilizing social engagement and boosting scientific and technological applications to forestry development.

The stratetgy also centers to uphold potentials and roles of forests to socio-economic development, protect the environment and water security, mitigate natural disasters, response to climate change, preserve natural resources and biological diversity.

Specifically, the strategy sets a goal that by 2025, Viet Nam would become one of world’s largest manufacturing centers for wood products trade.  Scientific and technological applications are expected to contribute 30% of forestry growth value.

To materialize the goals, the strategy aims to build forestry infrastructure, modernize forestry sectors and logistics services, reorganize production regions to develop key products, develop the wood processing industry in a modern, efficient, and environmentally friendly manner fashion. At least three high-tech forestry areas will be built in the North, Centre and South of Viet Nam.

Earlier, PM Phuc passed a new project to build one billion trees by late 2025 including 690 million trees in urban and rural areas and 310 million others in concentrated forests.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development's Viet Nam Administration of Forestry stated there are about 4.64 million hectares of protection forest across the whole country, including 3.95 million hectares of natural forest and 0.69 million of planted forest.

The total area of natural forest decreased from 4.3 million hectares in 2010 to 3.95 million hectares in 2019, while the area of planted forest increased slightly from 0.61 million hectares in 2010 to 0.69 million hectares in 2019.

In 2020, the sector’s production, processing and consumption of wood and forest products were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, causing breaks in the global supply chain,.

The pandemic has also had a negative impact on 6,000 enterprises in the forest production industry, especially over 1,600 enterprises processing and exporting forest products. Some of them had to close./.
