The MIT has researched over 20 locations which can house nuclear power plants, and made a top-10 list in the official master plan.

It has proposed the central province of Ninh Thuận as the ideal location for the first plant which has the total capacity of 4,000 MW because the province is endowed with geological advantages.

Regarding technology and safety, experts have proposed the application of light water and pressure technologies. Light water nuclear reactors are very popular in the world thanks to their high safety level.

Under a national plan on electricity development till 2030 approved by the Government, Việt Nam will gradually increase the proportion of nuclear power in its total electricity output to 7-8% and then 15-20% by 2050.

The MIT said fossil fuel sources in Việt Nam are running out. Crude oil fields are estimated to exhaust in the next 30-40 years. When series of coal-fueled power plants come into operation in 2012-2013, the country will have to import coal.
