State President bilaterally meets world leaders in New York

VGP – While attending the 64th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, State President Nguyễn Minh Triết on Thursday (local time) met top leaders of Japan, Austria, Venezuela, the UK and the UNDP Administrator.

During a meeting with Japanese PM Yukio Hatoyama, the State President expressed his belief that under the leadership of the new Japanese cabinet, the relations between Việt Nam and Japan will further develop.  

The Vietnamese Head of State underlined Việt Nam’s support for Japan to become a permanent member of the UN Security Council.

The new Japanese Government pledged to nurture the bilateral ties on the basis of strategic partnership, said PM Yukio Hatoyama.

Applauding the Vietnamese efforts to mitigate negative impacts of the global economic and financial turmoil, PM Yukio Hatoyama informed his Government’s decision to offer Việt Nam with a US $500 million credit in this field.

Receiving his Austrian counterpart, State President Nguyễn Minh Triết suggested the two countries cooperate and support each other on international forums, especially in the context when the two countries are non-permanent members of the UN Security Council (UNSC) and Việt Nam will take the presidency of ASEAN next year.

The Vietnamese leader also sought Austrian support for Việt Nam in cementing and deepening the comprehensive ties with the European Union (UN), negotiating the Partnership and Cooperation Agreement (PCA) with the EU, and persuading the European Commission (EC) to recognize the country as a market economy.

Meeting with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, both leaders agreed that the two countries have numerous potentials for closer economic ties.

President Hugo Chavez expressed his desire to tap more opportunities for cooperation with Việt Nam in the areas of agriculture and industry.

In his reception with UNDP Administrator Helen Clark,  the Vietnamese Head of State underscored that Việt Nam would take the lead in realizing the ‘One UN Initiative,’ calling for UNDP’s further assistance and cooperation with Việt Nam in economic development and implementation of UN initiatives.

The UNDP Administrator said that UNDP would support Việt Nam and beef up ties between UNDP and ASEAN.

On the day, State President Nguyễn Minh Triết also met British PM Gordon Brown and attended a meeting with US business representatives.

The Vietnamese leader also sat for the fifth annual meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) foundation which has made great contributions and supports for Việt Nam in health and environment fields.

Also on Thursday, Deputy PM, FM Phạm Gia Khiêm separately held talks with Japanese FM Katsuya Okada, Brazilian FM Celso Amorim, and Nepali FM Sujata Koirala.
On behalf of the Governments of Việt Nam and Estonia, Deputy PM, FM Phạm Gia Khiêm and Estonian FM Urmas Paet inked an Agreement on Investment Promotion and Protection./.
