PM underlines UN, IAEA’s central role for nuclear security

They also discussed the role of international organizations like the United Nations and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in the field.

Joining the session, PM Nguyễn Tấn Dũng stressed that the UN and IAEA must take the central role in speeding up nuclear applications and safeguarding nuclear security.

Praising for the valuable contributions of the IAEA to the world peace and safe use of atomic energy, he put forward three proposals to promote the agency’s functions.

First, the IAEA should further expand its coordinating role in joint programs and activities conducted by various countries, especially its Nuclear Security Plan in the period of 2010-2013.

Second, the agency should enhance its assistance to developing countries in building safe nuclear infrastructure and in improving their nuclear management capacity.

Third, more resources and better conditions should be raised for the agency so that it can operate more efficiently within its assigned domains.

PM Dũng took the occasion to call on the international community to organize a Việt Nam-initiated global conference on nuclear energy use for peaceful purposes. The Initiative was recorded in the UN Security Council’s Resolution No. 1887 adopted in September 2009 at the UNSC Summit on nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation.
