Party Central Committee agrees for President Vo Van Thuong to step down

Vo also stops serving as member of the Politburo and member of the 13th Party Central Committee and Chairman of the Council for National Defense and security, the Party Central Committee decided at a meeting in Ha Noi on Wednesday.

Vo is a key figure of the Party and the State and he was trusted and assigned to undertake several important positions, according to a statement released after the meeting.

However, he committed the Party regulations and his violations and flaws have negatively affected the public perception and the reputation of the Party and the State.

Being aware of his responsibilities before the Party, the State and the people, Vo has sent in his resignation from his positions, said the statement.

Vo was born in An Phuoc commune, Mang Thit district of the Mekong Delta province of Vinh Long on December 13, 1970.

He served as member of the Central Committee of Vietnamese Students' Association between 1992 and 1993.

From 1993 to 2004, he was Vice Secretary and then Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union (HCYU); Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City Youth Union; Member of the HCYU Central Committee and the Standing Board of the HCYU Central Committee; Member of the HCM City's Party Committee (from October 2003).

From November 2004 to October 2006, he was a member of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee, Secretary of the Party Committee of District 12. In April 2006, Vo was elected alternate member of the Party Central Committee at the 10th National Party Congress.

He served as Permanent Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union Central Committee from October 2006, and First Secretary of the Youth Union Central Committee from January 2007.

From January 2011 to April 2014, he was member of the Party Central Committee, Secretary of the Quang Ngai provincial Party Committee (from August 2011).

From April 2014 to January 2016, he was member of the Party Central Committee, Permanent Deputy Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee.

He was elected to the Politburo and the Secretariat of the Party Central Committee in January 2016.

From February 2016 to January 2021, he was Politburo member, Secretary of the Party Central Committee, Chairman of the Party Central Committee's Commission of Information and Education, and Deputy of the 14th-tenure National Assembly.

From January 2021, he served as Politburo member, Permanent member of the Party Central Committee's Secretariat (from February 2021).

On March 2, 2023, he was elected President of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam at the fourth extraordinary meeting of the 15th-tenure National Assembly./.
