VGP – The Civil Aviation Administration of Viet Nam (CAAV) has decided to re-open five airports in central region after Storm Molave weakened to tropical depression.

Specifically, Da Nang airport resumed operation from 9:00 pm on October 28 while Tuy Hoa (in Phu Yen province), Phu Cat (Binh Dinh province), Pleiku (Gia Lai province), Phu Bai (Thua Thien-Hue province) re-started operation from 6:00 am of October 29.

However, Chu Lai airport continues to be suspended within the next 48 hours due to heavy damages caused by the storm.

Earlier, the CAAV closed the six airports in the central and Central Highlands regions from October 27  in an effort to ensure safety for passengers and crew members, prompting airlines to cancel hundreds of flights.

The national flag carrier Viet Nam Airlines alone had to cancel 104 flights from/to Vinh, Dong Hoi, Phu Bai, Danang, Chu Lai, Phu Cat, Pleiku and Tuy Hoa airports.

Storm Molave, the strongest to hit Viet Nam in the past two decades, made landslides in Quang Nam and Quang Ngai provinces on Wednesday morning before weakening to a tropical depression on the same day.

Torrential rains and waters discharged from hydropower dams have caused rivers in these provinces to swell and threaten widespread flooding./.
