The same day, Deputy PM, FM Phạm Gia Khiêm also cabled his message of condolences to Japan’s FM Takeaki Matsumoto.

The incident triggered dozens of fires and a massive tsunami that swept away houses and cars and killed at least 1,000 people, reported the Kyodo News Agency.

No Vietnamese citizen has been reported dead after the earthquake. The Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs instructed representative agencies in Japan to closely follow the situation and take necessary measures to assist the Vietnamese citizens there.
