This is the first BOO (build-operate-own) project in Việt Nam with the term of 50 years.

The US $1.4-billion project was approved by the Ministry of Industry and Trade to be included in the electricity planning scheme. The construction is scheduled to start in 2009 and the plant will be put into operation in 2015.

Malaysian investors have invested in many other large-scale projects throughout Việt Nam. In September 2008, a joint venture between the Lion Group and the Việt Nam Shipping Industry Group  were licensed to build a US $9.8-billion steel complex in central Ninh Thuận Province. Berjaya Land Bhd Group is pouring US $3.5 billion in a university urban quarter in Hồ Chí Minh City.

According to the Foreign Investment Agency of the Ministry of Planning and Investment, in the first nine months of 2008, Malaysia became the leading investor in Việt Nam with 37 projects capitalized at US $14.8 billion.
